Baime Hydropower Project

Currently less than 15% of the population in Papua New Guinea (PNG) has access to electricity. The PNG Government aims to connect at least 70% of the population to electricity by 2030. As part of PNG Power Limited’s Fifteen Year Power Development Plan (2016- 2031), the project is also significant from an environmental viewpoint as it replaces diesel-generated power.

Prior to our client developing an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for a major hydropower project on the Purari River, SMEC were engaged to prepare a Resettlement Strategy Study.

Port Lae Tidal Basin (Phase 2)

Lae Tidal Basin Phase 2 Infrastructure Development Works are part of a 30-year masterplan developed by PNG Ports Corporation Limited (PNGPCL) to increase port capacity and catalyse industrial and commercial development in the region.

Bulolo Water Supply Project Concept & Detailed Design for Taun Creek

In 2020, SMEC PNG, in association with SMEC International Pty Ltd, was engaged by Water PNG Ltd as engineering consultant to assess and provide technical advice on the viability of the Taun Creek as a potential source of the Bulolo Water Supply. The assignment covered the development of concept and detailed design phases of the intake structure which included hydrological assessments based on the town’s demand, ecology and water quality of the proposed site.

Civil Aviation Development Investment Program Technical Assistance

In 2018, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved the knowledge and support technical assistance (TA) grant to PNG to help prepare the next phase of Civil Aviation Development Investment Program (CADIP II). The TA was tasked to develop an integrated program for the (i) delivery of basic services and sustainable connectivity; (ii) infrastructure investments and capacity development; and (iii) aviation policy interventions to enable efficient, cost recovery and equitable service delivery.

Management of Transport Sector Support Program - Phase 2

SMEC International Pty Ltd was engaged by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to manage and administer the Transport Sector Support Program – Phase 2. SMEC PNG was engaged by SMEC to provide logistic, administrative and technical support to the project by providing national experts/professionals. TSSP is a long- term commitment by Australia to support Papua New Guinea achieve a well-maintained transport infrastructure network.
